A Touch of Grandeur

Don’t make your way down to newly opened club, Baroke at Grant Road, if you’re not up for a party, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

If you’re familiar with the elaborate style of Baroque architecture and art, you’ll understand the inspiration behind the décor as well as the name of Baroke, the newest club to hit South Mumbai.

We started our night at Baroke by heading to the VIP section, lounging in the king sized chairs that made us feel like royalty with their curved gold handles and plush purple cushioned seats. The gold accents make it clear that when the club does open for public, it will not be for those with shallow pockets, with the `1,500 entry for couples sealing that thought.

Baroke has a narrow dance floor, coming to a comfortable end by a big bar. The cushioned walls to one side are lined with tables and sofa sets laden with cushions.

We tried several gin-based cocktails, of which the Ecstasy (`475), a mixture of cranberry juice, mint, lime and gin, was our favourite. We weren’t fans of the Blueberry Margarita (`475) and the Cecilia (`475) was interesting but had too much coconut. Adam’s Appletini (`475) was delicious and the Whiskey Sour (`450) was a hit too.

Food wise, Baroke surprised us. We’re used to food in a club being just okay, so we weren’t expecting much. We weren’t excited about the Tangy Chicken Tikka (`350) and shrugged at the boring sounding Tomato Pesto Toasties (`350), both of which we eventually drooled over. The Spicy Paneer Wrap (`250) and the Breaded Butterfly Prawns (`475) were also great.

The music at the club is decent, they play your run-off-the-mill hip hop and pop, grabbing what they can off the charts and throwing it in with a little dance mix, so you can find yourself dancing to Adele’s Someone Like You as well as Pitbull tracks on the same night.

While Baroke can make you feel like royalty, be careful not to over-order as it may end up making you leave with pockets befitting a pauper.
