BEER & BURGER

Friday, May 25, 2012

There’s just something about a greasy burger and a cold pint of beer that gets us excited. And so, if you’re anything like the 48HRS team, you’ll love the list we’ve compiled for you...

A big, succulent burger and a chilled beer is just what the doctor ordered to get over the work week. Everyone knows beers and burgers go really well together and Naveen Kotyankar, partner of Lagerbay sums it up perfectly, telling us, "Beers and burgers, are partners in crime. When you're having a meaty cheesy burger, it would take nothing less than a beer to battle it out." So, let’s get your grub on!

The Little Door
B & B for two: `900

The Little Door is a fun and friendly pub, that will force you to have a good time, and it’s perfect for an after work bite. The restaurant has a lot of great food and besides offering a variety of international and domestic beers (`167 onwards) and vegetarian and non-vegetarian burgers, they also organise fun championships such as Jug Chug and TLD Burger Off! These beer guzzling and burger hogging championships take place on the last Saturday of every month. Winners get free burgers for an entire month! So, tomorrow is the perfect day to hit TLD. All you have to do is pre-register to choose your burger and be the first to finish it all off within three minutes — and that includes the fries. With the mouth-watering chicken (`223), vegetable (`185), fish (`243) and beef (`243) burgers that they offer, we’re sure winning is not going to be that tough.

The Big Nasty
B & B for two: `700

Bandra’s hippest new pub might not be the first on your mind when it comes to food. But, if you can manage to tear your eyes away from the people dancing on the tables (it happens more often than we would like) then order the burger. You should. No, no. You must! The All American Beef Burger (`250), a succulent beef patty topped with a fried egg, is a greasy treat that will be perfectly washed down with a pint (starts from `185). We also recommend the Hell’s Angel and the unusual but delicious Turkish Lamb Burger (`280), topped with feta. Be warned though, the burgers are pretty large and you won’t look pretty eating them. However, if you’re not up for such a big portion, you should definitely avail of their Beer & Burger Binge. Here you get four pints of beer and one portion of mini burgers (four pieces) for `650. The carnivore can choose from Beef & Feta, Mustard & BBQ Pork and a Fish Koliwada burger (all `225)! Vegetarians only have the option of Corn Tikki and Cornflake Crusted Potato.

Pop Tates
B & B for two: `800

They’ve been popular for their sizzlers and their meals, but Pop Tates whips up a mean burger too. It can get a little full with boisterous youngsters and teenagers just out of college, but if you don’t mind the cheerful banter, you can kick back and enjoy a delicious Lamb Burger with Cheese (`145), washed down with a pint of beer of your choice. And if you want a bit more adult atmosphere, we suggest heading to their Andheri outlet.

Woodside Inn
B & B for two: `800

Located in the heritage building of south Mumbai, Woodside Inn is the perfect place to stop by after shopping at Colaba to indulge in some scrumptious burgers and beer. Woodside Inn offers international and Indian beers such as Kingfisher (India), Asahi (Japan), Heineken (Holland), Stella Artois and Leffe Blone (Belgium), Corona (Mexico), Erdinger (Germany), Birra Moretti (Italy), Murphy’s Irish Stout (Ireland) and many more. The starting price of beer is `125 for a Kingfisher pint and goes up to `425 for Murphy’s Irish Stout. For burgers you can try their Double Cheddar Beef Burger (`295), Crunchy Fish Burger with Pickled Ginger (`295), BBQ Chicken Burger (`260) or Grilled Italian Vegetable Burger (`235). So, sit back and enjoy your beer and burger in a warm and vibrant ambiance at Woodside Inn.

Largerbay
B & B for two: `1,000

We can’t think of a more perfect place to enjoy a burger and a few pints of beer (`180 onwards) than the booth style seating at Lagerbay. While they just have four types of burgers to choose from (two vegetarian and two non-vegetarians) they pack a punch. The Beef Burger (`290) is topped with a sinful strip of bacon and is accompanied by fries and a healthy salad (ha!). We recommend that vegetarians try the Tomato & Mozzarella (`240) burger with sour cream. Also, for all the people who work in Bandra, you can head down there for their Express Lunch. You can enjoy a pre-set three course meal with a soup or salad, a quick main course and a sinful dessert. Along with this you get a pint of beer or iced tea or a fruit frappe. The beer choices at Lagerbay are also more extensive than other pubs and you can enjoy the surprisingly light Asahi (`300) and the newly introduced Murphy’s Irish Stout!

TGIF
B & B for two: `1,400

With outlets all over the city and some great deals, it doesn’t have to be Friday to celebrate at TGIF. The ambiance is loud, but perfect for a good old fashioned beer and burger meal, with its wooden tables, sofa seats and exuberant waiters. Pop in for a beer and burger if you want something utterly delicious — but don’t expect it to be a cheap evening snack. Our favourite, Friday’s Tenderloin Cheese burger with bacon (`349) is a huge steak patty, covered with sinful cheese and grilled to perfection. With beer starting from `250 and lots of options — this is one place to head down to that will make every day feel like Friday.

Jugheads
B & B for two: `300

If you are looking for value for money and some easy-on-the-pocket beers, head down to Jugheads. A popular hangout place for the college crowd because of its reasonable price, Jugheads does not have a great ambience but they play some good music and offer a pint of beer for just `180. Their Chicken and Ham burgers (`105) and Vegetarian Burger (`95) are worth the trip to Jugheads, regardless of the ambiance. They are filling and well seasoned, served along with a side of fries. They also have great offers on pitchers of beers and make for a perfect place to relax and rewind with your gang over beers and burgers.

Bombay Blue
B & B for two: `600

Bombay Blue outlets in the city are known for their nachos, but their huge burgers are definitely something you cannot miss out on the next time you visit. Also, people may be surprised to know that Bombay Blue actually serves beer! It is only the Andheri outlet, located at Shopper’s Stop, which doesn’t serve alcohol. They keep changing their menu, the result of which is the loss of a really good corn and nachos based burger — we really hope they bring that back. However, they still have really good burgers such as the Bombay Blue Masala Double Decker (`135) and the Bombay Blue Chicken Burger (`175). The Masala Double Decker is a potato masala based burger and a good helping of mint chutney gives it an Indian taste. The Chicken Burger shows you what burgers should really be like. It is a two patty burger and is quite filling. A pint of beer at Bombay Blue costs `200.

Café Mondegar
B & B for two: `800

Café Mondegar is much more of a beer place than a burger joint – at least that’s how most of us know it. But, people who’ve been there swear by their food. While they don’t have too much variety, they do have something other burger joints don’t have; the Mondy’s Special Steak Cheese Burger (`200) which is a must-try. Other burgers include Vegetarian Burger (`140, with cheese `150) and Chicken Burger (`160, with cheese `170). But, we recommend that you go in for the Steak Burger. Beer pints start at `160 and you also have the option of tap beer, a mug of which costs `140. More than just the burgers and beers at Café Mondegar, it is the old vintage ambience that you’ll remember it by.

Hard Rock Cafe
B & B for two: `1,200

Hard Rock Café, or HRC as it is fondly known as, needs no introduction. It is the place to be if you want to enjoy classic rock and relish a good burger. It's one of the best places to kick back and have a pint of beer (Colaba `250 onwards) while watching live performances of various well known international as well as local bands and artists; with its elevated stage and amazing sound system. Their Legendary 10 Oz Burger is a must-try. It’s a huge treat loaded with seasoned bacon, melted cheddar cheese, crispy onion rings and pickles. And it’s filling enough for two. The Hard Rock Café have also launched a new menu where they’ve gone desi and prepared a Tandoori Burger (pictured above) for fans of Indian food.
