For a quiet evening away from the traffic and busy streets of Mumbai, how about dining in middle of the ocean? Trisha Ghoroi visits Ark Deck Bar to find out if it’s worth the hype

Weekly dinners at new restaurants are getting monotonous. If what you seek is a special evening, how about booking a table at the new floating restaurant in the city that has become the talk of the town? Ark Deck Bar, a ship turned into a restaurant, floats in the Arabian Sea right next to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and is all over social media. We had to visit to see what the fuss was about.

Getting there

However, Ark Deck Bar isn’t the only floating restaurant in the area; in fact, it has two competitors. The boat ride to the ship had us a little worried, but we soon settled on the excursion boat and it seemed a little less scary. The 15-minute journey is where the fun begins. A boat ferrying patrons to Ark Deck Bar leaves every hour starting at 5pm and we took the 6pm boat. Take note: This is the best time slot if you want to enjoy watching the sunset behind the Sea Link. The view is unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Hopping on

When: it came to stepping on to Ark Deck Bar, we were expecting it to be a jump; but fortunately the stairs provide a stable welcome, and there are lifeguards to help you. The dining area of the deck stretches across three levels. The middle level has indoor seating, which flaunts a Victorian theme. With dark stained wood interiors, vintage chandeliers and bright yellow light, the décor translated the theme perfectly. Up on the deck, the décor was much brighter, and the blue and white added a lovely nautical touch. There is a deck above this as well, which is smaller and reserved for private dining. We settled in on the deck (middle level), anchored near the beautiful Sea Link and were excited to dig into some food and drinks off their menu.

Eating at sea

To start off the evening, I decided to order a Passionate Daiquiri (Rs 650) where as my teetotaller dining companion called for a mocktail, the Grasshopper (Rs 300). The daiquiri was tangy with a hint of sweetness and had a subtle taste of the alcohol, while the refreshing Grasshopper was a layered drink that was mostly sweet with a tangy note and a hint of lemongrass.

For starters, we ordered the Spinach Ricotta Cigars (Rs 390) and Calamari Rings (Rs 450). The cigars had a creamy filling of ricotta cheese with a hint of spice. The outer layer was crunchy making it a nice snack to start with. The calamari rings were a little too oily, but had a crisp outer layer. For main course, we had a Steak Dog (Rs 520) with the option of lamb, which to our surprise came in the form of a sandwich (and not a hot dog). However, after taking a bite we had no complaint with the spicy lamb and soft fluffy bread. Sadly, the Vegetable Spaghetti (Rs 490) wasn’t the best. The spaghetti was too soft and the dish lacked proper seasoning. Since we were worried about the return journey on a full stomach, we decided to give dessert a miss.

Ark Deck Bar is a wonderful place, we think, for a one-time experience. The lower level of the ship also has three suites for stay, each of which follows a Victorian theme, just like the restaurant. If you’re prone to motion sickness, exercise caution as even though the ship is anchored, you might feel a little dizzy. The restaurant also has a couple of lifeboats and lifeguards on board in case of emergencies. Our experience at Ark Deck Bar was pleasant, but the standard of food wasn’t up to the mark, which was a little disappointing.
