Into an artist’s mind
A look into the working mind of a troubled artist is always interesting says Rhea Dhanbhoora
Have you ever looked at a painting and wondered what the artist was thinking at the time? The Art Loft is helping you get started with learning about the life and thoughts of artists by giving you a preview into the life and times of Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh, who has had songs sung about him and books dedicated to the troubled story of his life.
The painter, whose work includes the famous Sunflowers and Starry, Starry Night, was a troubled genius who died at the age of 37 from a gunshot wound that was said to be self-inflicted. He suffered from bouts of mental illness in between painting some of his best works and had violent relationships with other artists.
The workshop will be held by Himanshu S., who was awarded Merit at the J.J school of Arts and is a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts & Craft. He recently created the Bombay Underground, an interactive art library and book shop in Bandra and exhibited solo and group shows in venues such as Tao Art Gallery, National Gallery of Modern Art, Jehangir Art Gallery, the blueFROG and the NCPA.
Director of The Art Loft, Kevin Tayebaly says, “We were agog with the success of the Andy Warhol workshop we had in August, so we really wanted to offer a second artist close up. What better choice than Van Gogh? It will be a fantastic opportunity for the audience to become familiar with his work, along with the plethora of contemporary artists he has influenced.”
For a view into the world of still-life paintings, flowers, self portraits, landscapes and portraits in oils, watercolours and even sketches and prints, head to The Art Loft. The workshop will be held over four sessions in which you can get to know the artist as well as take a brief tour through his drawings and self portraits.
