COMMODORE ASPI MARKER – Upholding the highest tradition of Naval Service

By Dr. Shernaz Baji Avari

Pride of the community and the country, Commodore Aspi Marker was awarded the Nao Sena Medal on Republic Day 2003 for his excellent performance, dedication and duty in keeping with the highest tradition of Naval Service.

Born on 25th May 1949 in Mumbai, he holds an M.Sc (Defence Studies) degree as well as MMS (Master of Management Studies). The contribution of his family to the Armed Forces is unique in that between his father, his brother and himself, there was one person serving in each – the Army, the Navy & the Air Force! This makes them the only Parsi family in the country and perhaps in the world to achieve such distinguished achievements!

Commodore Marker joined the National Defence Academy as a Cadet in 1969 and was later commissioned to the Executive branch of the Indian Navy in 1971 where he took part in the Indo-Pak war and was in command of the Indian Naval Ship.

After the devastating earthquake in 2001 in Gujarat, Commodore Marker was appointed Officer-in-Charge and under his able leadership, men and material were expeditiously mobilised for relief operation. Two Warships of the Indian Navy were innovatively converted into floating Hospitals for treating surgically, seriously wounded casualties.

Awards, accolades and felicitations have been a part and parcel of his actively dedicated life as he has earnestly strived to devote his time and energy in the service and welfare of the community as many Parsi Anjumans and Associations have felicitated him for his meritorious deeds, the latest being the Maneckji Limji Hataria Trophy for Heroism by Iran League for achieving the Nao Sena Medal (Retd), Indian Navy. He has been featured in the book ‘Eminent Parsis 1964-2005.  The Parsi Resource Group has included him in the ‘Parsi Wall of Fame’ for his sterling qualities and coveted professional achievements.  He has organized a blood camp in Parsi General Hospital and for the last 21 years has coordinated the Defence Services Capsule.

Always helpful, humble, well-mannered, a person of compassion, benevolence and wise generosity, Aspi enjoys an impeccable reputation in the community. His acts of charity for the under privileged and the down trodden often go unnoticed as he believes in carrying on the same in his own quiet way.

May Ahura Mazda shower his blessings on him and his loved family members.
