V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award for Shyam Benegal

The Dr. V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on veteran film maker Shyam Benegal during the concluding ceremony of the 2018 Mumbai International Film Festival  (MIFF 2018), a  biennial festival of short documentary films, organised by the Films Division, and inaugurated by the Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, at a function held at NCPA in South Mumbai.

The award, comprising of a trophy, a shawl, citation and Rs 10,00,000, was given to Benegal for his contribution to the documentary film movement in India.

The award for contribution to the documentary movement is conferred on a veteran filmmaker at every MIFF in memory of V Shantaram, who was closely associated with the Films Division as Honorary Chief Producer during the 1950s.

While Benegal has made 28 feature films, including films like 'Ankur', 'Nishant', 'Mandi' and 'Junoon',  his filmography includes 41 documentaries covering a wide variety of subjects, including cultural anthropology, art and culture. His 1982 documentary ‘Satyajit Ray’ won the National Award for Best Biographical Film, while his 1985 film ‘Nehru’ won the award for Best Historical Reconstruction. He also directed the TV soap 'Bharat Ek Khoj' for Doordarshan.

On the occasion the prestigious Golden Conch award for  'the Best documentary' comprising Rs 10 lakh was given to director and producer of the Austrian documentary 'Brother Jakob, Are You Listening' ( 86 minutes). The director Stefan Bohun was given Rs 5,00,000, the Golden Conch and a   certificate of recognition. The producer-Ralf Wieser was given Rs 5,00,000  and a certificate. The Silver Conch award for best documentary (less than 60 minutes) went to Indian documentary ' Ima Sabitri' (57 minutes).
