Syed Ali Jafer has held so far as many as 93 solo shows – perhaps a record. He depicts some harsh realities – not always a pleasant realism. There is no sympathy – the society is distant and uncaring.
The artist distorts faces and bodies to get the right expressions. The eyes in some paintings almost look frightening. The world of Syed Ali Jafar is not at all pleasant or pretty. He wants to present as per his perceptions. There is sadness, frustration, pain. In one of his works, we see the head – an empty bowl like shape. And from it descends a sharp comical, green face with a long nose. There is a faint suggestion of hair on the face. In another painting, he paints a comical face of a man and all around it there are faces of women with different expressions.
One thing is clear: He follows no fixed, set rules. He was his own language to produce works of art.
His studio is at Aligarh.
