Thanks to the community policing initiative launched by the Thane (rural) police a notorious drug peddler landed behind bars on Wednesday night. Armed with credible information passed by members of a housing society minutes after an interactive session, the men in khaki, led by Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kamble, pounced on a seasoned drug peddler who had been brazenly supplying cannabis (ganja) to locals in and around the region.

The accused, identified as Amir Mohammed Shaikh (28), was arrested from a tenement in the Nehru Nagar area of Bhayandar (W). Ganja weighing 400 grams was recovered from Shaikh’s possession, following which he was booked under relevant Sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. “Investigations are on to ascertain the source of the cannabis (ganja) and establish his local buyers,” said Kamble, who attributed the successful crackdown on the drug mafia to the active participation of the local populace in community policing.

In an attempt to flush out drug mafia and other anti-social elements from the region, the Thane (rural) police, led by Superintendent of Police Dr. Mahesh Patil, is in overdrive mode to reduce the police-public communication gap by organising interactive sessions with members of housing societies on a regular basis.
