If you think that officers of Mumbai Police and the constabulary are only known for nabbing criminals and investigating cases, think again. There are some men in this force who work as snake friends and try to rescue snakes in and around Mumbai.

Police constable Murlidhar Jadhav, attached to Shivaji Park police station in Dadar, is one such policeman who attends several 'rescue calls' in a day from people seeking his assistance in rescuing venomous snakes in their locality. All this is done by Jadhav at his own cost.

In one such recent Sunday evening incident at Chinchwada, at the outskirts of Kalyan - a few kilometers away from Jadhav's house - a full-size cobra was found. Jadhav reached the spot to facilitate the reptile's rescue. A 6-year-old boy was reportedly bitten by the snake as told to Jadhav on the call. He reached the spot and first treated the boy with first-aid which he usually carries along with him wherever he travels. After attending to the wound of the boy, Jadhav realised that it was not a snake bite. However, by that time locals had killed the snake.

Jadhav said, “I have been rescuing snakes for about 15 years now. I started in my native village in Jalgaon. I was 10-year-old when I was bitten by a snake and a snake-friend Rajesh Tombre attended to me by giving me a first-aid treatment and saved my life. Since then, I started researching on snakes and know presently how to safely rescue them. I generally receive about 20 calls from different place in Mumbai and Thane and have approximately rescued over 2,500 snakes including some highly venomous ones.”

He further added, “During my police training period, there were several occasions where snakes were seen crawling on the training ground which I rescued too. When I was deputed at Shivaji Park police station, there were constant encounters with snakes at the nearby ground and  locals first called the police to rescue them.

“Nowadays, I rescue snakes on emergency calls from BMC, police control and calls from locals. After reaching the spot and rescuing the reptile, I try to ascertain if the snake has been injured and then after treating it, it is handed over to the Forest Department.”
