The open space lying beside Bandra Skywalk will be put to use for traffic relief and safety of railway commuters

In a meeting between Railway officials and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Bandra SATIS plan finally seems to take shape. A primary level approval was obtained and plans to put the space to maximum usage was drawn. SATIS, Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme, is a plan to use the places lying along the railway tracks, which come under the jurisdiction of the railways, for its future usage but which currently are occupied by encroachers. The BMC is trying to make use of these lands to reduce traffic along the station areas.

Bandra east is a crowded space and in peak hours it gets difficult to commute, firstly because of the number of companies located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and secondly due to the encroachers who have occupied the space below the skywalk. The BMC's H East Ward, had a meeting with railway officials, yesterday wherein this issue was discussed. Ward officer, Alka Sasane said, “At the meeting we have discussed the issue at a very primary level and plans to use this space to ease traffic, to ease pedestrian usage to safeguard the railway commuters. This meeting was arranged as per the orders of the collector, the DCP and BMC officials were present.”

She also added that another meeting will be held in the next 15 days to appoint a consultant who will study the area and submit a report as to how the place can be used for maximum usage. This land is primarily the space besides the Bandra east skywalk near the SRA building. “As of now, the project is in its initial stages and our primary focus would be smooth traffic for vehicles and pedestrians. Bridges can also be built as per needs. Since the authority for the land is the Railways an NOC has to be obtained from them.”

As of now the land is used for farming and by encroachers, after the SATIS project is brought up, the BMC hopes to use the land for the betterment of its citizens.
