Local train services on Central railway were hit due to the derailment of a goods wagon in Thane yesterday, making it extremely inconvenient for commuters. The derailment which took place at around 3:45, close to the peak hours, affected long distance and local trains that resulted in snail-paced running of the services.

Derailment of the goods wagon  affected the running of local trains causing a delay of 30 minutes on the Central line. The lines werecleared after nearly two hours. Derailment also caused  a big delay for two local trains and an express train that got stranded behind the goods train. Normal operations resumed after nearly three hours of the derailment.

The fast locals were diverted to the slow line after the derailment, while the stranded trains were directed to reverse to Diva station and then run on the slow lines, which took around an hour.

However, the derailments on the Central line was not new to commuters, but unlike before,  time to time announcements from the Motorman cabin about the derailment helped commuters make quick decisions of using other means of transport. It was spotted that many preferred to get off the stranded locals, move to the nearest stations and go ahead, while the rest waited patiently to continue their journey.

"Though the motorman had announced that the train would be going backwards, to Diva station, and would continue running towards CSMT on the slow track, it had been quite a long time since the  announcement and hence we were forced to get down, walk on the tracks and continue the journey,'' said Prashant Kadam (30), from Dombivli.

"I was going to Thane to meet my grandchildren and was supposed to come back by 7 pm, but it seemed difficult to meet them, as it was nearly two hours and I got stuck in a stranded local. Unlike others, I couldn't jump down and walk on the tracks. I  waited for the train to get back to Diva station," said Shanti Sharma (65), from Vitthalwadi.

"Now it's been a routine story for us. As such derailments happens every now and then, especially on the CR, we are clueless as to the reason behind the Mega blocks being carried out by the Railways, as we commuters have to face inconvenience issues whatsoever due to regular technical errors in local services," said Piyush Jadhav (45), Kalyan.

According to the official, the rerailment of the goods train was completed at around 6:30 pm, by clearing the derailed wagons and ensuring fitness of the track. Gradually, services on the Up line were resumed.
