Yet another hit and run case in Mumbai and yet another life lost. A 60 year old taxi driver succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a drunken truck driver near Sion Hospital. The erring truck driver was nabbed by traffic police after being alerted by one of the senior doctors at the Sion Hospital.

Last Friday, Dr Niranjan Chavan was on his way to the hospital at about 7 am when he heard a loud thud and passersby shouting at a truck heading in his direction. About 100 feet away he saw an old man lying in a pool of blood, with blood oozing out of his right leg and a blood-stained face. He was wearing a crisp white shirt and white trousers.

While the man struggled to get up, the lorry driver sped away. However,  Dr Chavan managed to note the truck registration number, despite it being blurry and covered with dirt, in the nick of time. It appeared to be “MH-04 93...” something. Dr Chavan rushed to the Sion hospital traffic police beat chowky and gave a description of the dirty yellow-coloured lorry to an officer there. The police officer directed a junior officer to visit the accident site and also wired other traffic police officers to chase or stop the lorry at the next signal.

Later, the injured Badrinarayan Yadav was brought to Sion Hospital by the police and bystanders. In the evening, upon making a casual inquiry, Dr Chavan realised that the culprit had been nabbed by the police. Tragically, the injured taxi driver succumbed to his injuries by 6 pm.
