Extension of platform and introduction of new rakes will take up to one year on the Harbour line

The Harbour line commuters who are still awaiting 12-compartment trains might just have to wait until this year end now. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) which is in charge of extending the platform expects the work to be completed by the year end as two platforms on the Harbour lines are yet to finish the extension work.

Platform extension work on Wadala station and CST station is yet to be done. Meanwhile, the passengers continue to suffer as the traffic at Kurla station is tremendous.

Speaking to the ADC, an official from the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) said, “The extension of the platforms has been successfully completed everywhere and only the Wadala and CST stations have been left. Work on Wadala is on in full swing and will require a few months to complete. The extension work at CST will take some time, we expect the work to finish by this year end. However, once that work is done, the signals should be shifted and additional coaches will be required which might take time.”

In order to de-congest the traffic at Kurla station, plans to run trains from Kurla to Panvel were proposed. However nothing was done about it. Speaking about the running of trains from Kurla to Panvel, Mukesh Nigam, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Mumbai Division, Central Railway said, “There are 16 trains operational during the peak hours both up and down. If the trains start from Kurla-Panvel it would cause delays and the train will be detained for a long time. However, the project for the elevated corridors and eliminating the surface crossing will help de-congest the traffic. Out of the bombardier rakes, 36 would come from the Harbour line. The work will not be completed in one go, but will be done in phases.”

At CST's platform 1, space is an issue as far as the extension of platform is concerned. The only possible solution is to extend Platform No 2. If this plan works out, the access and entry to the three coaches at the Masjid end will be only through Platform No 2.

A motorman on a CST-Panvel train said, “People risk their lives a lot at Kurla station, as the rush over there is huge and we get shocked seeing women also standing at the edge of the foot board who can fall anytime. Many times passengers fall on the platform when the train starts.”
