Senior citizen allege accounts operated fraudulently

The Charkop Police Station in Kandivali West registered a case of cheating against two persons in January this year, who are believed to have created fake documents and forged signatures to withdraw amounts to the tune of Rs 31 lakhs.

The victim, 63-year-old Purushottam Bhaskar Mhatre filed a complaint with the cops after he alleged that, post his brother Rajendra's death, the criminal duo created a bogus death certificate and a letter authorized by him (Mhatre), bearing his signature (which he claims was forged), which authorized the pair to operate and withdraw the  hefty amount.

The senior citizen said that he had not allowed or permitted the alleged accused to operate his savings account and the fixed deposit account in's Saraswat Bank's Hindustan Naka branch.

The letter also stated that the offenders were  authorized as witnesses by the deceased. The death certificate, along with the letter (created on March 3, 2016) was used in multiple places to make withdrawals.

Mhatre also claimed that the two of them, on December 20 in 2013 were present at the bank and went to a corner and spoke to each other for some time. The elderly man feels that this was the first time that they plotted against him and his dead brother and decided to use a host of illegitimate documents to cheat him of his cash.

The offenders have been booked under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust), 409 (Criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent), 465 (Punishment for forgery), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Pramod Dhavare, Senior Inspector, Charkop Police Station said, “We are not sure but the bank staff could be involved. However this is a technical matter and it will take some time before we establish facts as the victim's brother is dead and the document bears his signature too. So we don't know yet whether there is forgery involved or he had willingly authorized the two accused to operate once he is dead. These two persons have gone to the RBI office also in the past and done something of this nature. Before we start investigating further and interrogate the duo, the documents will be sent for verification. Only then can we reach a conclusion.”
