
The Election Commission of India (EC) yesterday announced the biennial elections to two Graduates constituencies of Mumbai and Konkan division’s and two
Teachers constituencies of Mumbai and Nashik division’s to be held on July 2. The model code of conduct for the elections has come into immediate effect and will be applicable for the district’s covered by these constituencies only.
The elections especially to the two Graduates constituencies in the Legislative Council witnessed litigation. It may be recalled that the Bombay High Court, taking cognisance of the reports appearing in ADC on May 4 and May 5 about voter registration for the Graduates constituencies, extended that deadline till June 15.
The retiring sitting MLCs who are seeking re-election in the respective constituencies include – Dr. Deepak Sawant (Shiv Sena) Mumbai Graduates, Sanjay Kelkar (BJP) Konkan Division Graduates, Diliprao S. Sonawane Nashik Division Graduates and Kapil Patil (Lokbharti) Mumbai Teachers constituency. The term of the sitting MLCs is to end on July 7. Surendra Srivastava of the Lok Satta Party (LSP) is also contesting as an LSP candidate from the Mumbai Graduates constituency.
As per the election programme schedule announced by EC yesterday, the last date for making nominations is June 15, scrutiny of nomination papers is on June 16, last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is on June 18, voting will take place on July 2 and counting of votes will take place on July 4.
