As the Republican Party leaders are making hectic efforts to unite faction ridden dalit forces in Maharashtra,  stressing the fact that unity is the need of the hour, two former bureaucrats deserted their outfits to join the Congress.

Two former Maharashtra cadre officials, Uttam Khobragade and Kishor Gajbhiye joined the Congress party. After retirement, Khobragade was office bearer of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) whereas Gajbhiye, who quit the government service was associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party. Both had been sulking in their respective outfits. Yesterday, they finally joined the Congress in the presence of party president, Rahul Gandhi. Both former bureaucrats were welcomed to the party fold by the Congress president.

Khobragade has handled several key assignments that include CEO of the Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner and General Manager of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the crucial transport wing of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Post-retirement, Khobragade had joined the Republican Party of India, headed by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, but later switched over to the Janshakti Party led by Ram Vilas Paswan.

Gajbhiye, who hails from Nagpur, served as the Additional Municipal Commissioner in the BMC and also as Secretary to the Social Justice department of the Mantralaya.

He quit the government job and joined the private sector. Later, he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party headed by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati. He contested the 2014 state Assembly elections from Nagpur, but lost.
