The Vanrai Police yesterday arrested two technicians for stealing Rs 28 lakh from an ATM situated at SRP camp in Goregaon near Western Express highway. The arrested accused on March 10 had robbed the ATM without damaging it.
After the robbery, the police were initially clueless as the CCTV cameras inside the ATM were non-functional when the incident took place due to which nothing was captured in cameras.
However, as the buglers robbed the ATM without damaging the machine the investigating team had a suspicion that t bank employees may have been involved in the robbery as only bank officials responsible for depositing cash in the ATM machines are aware of the password to open ATM machines. Subsequently, cops discovered that the two different companies - TISCO and SSCM – who used to deposit cash in State Bank of India's ATM machines had recently merged together. Following which a couple of employees from both the companies were fired.
“When we discovered that the companies had recently merged and later fired some employees we were sure that there was someone from either of the companies who was involved in the crime. We immediately asked the merged companies to give dump data of the particular spot where crime took place,” said a police official.
“In dump data we found two numbers which belonged to the technicians who were removed from the jobs after these companies were merged. Subsequently, we obtained their addresses and arrested one accused from Vikhroli and his accomplice from Vengurla, Sindhudurg,” he added.
“The arrested accused have been identified as Jagdish Patel (34) ex-employee of TISCO and Ritesh Barge (32) ex-employee of SSCM. Both were technicians and were aware of the ATM machine's password and also about non-functional cameras following which they decided to rob the ATM,” the police official said.“We have recovered Rs 21.63 lakh from the arrested duo. In their confession, they revealed that after being fired from the job they decided to take revenge following which they chalked a plan to rob the ATM. Both the accused were produced before the court on Monday and sent into police custody,” the police official added.
