Travelling in the first class compartments on Central (CR) and Western Railway (WR) is going to cost commuters more as the fare hike as announced in the Railway Budget will come into effect from Sunday, April 1.
The hike for a single journey ranges from a minimum of Rs.4 to a maximum of Rs.14, while for monthly season ticket (MST) the increase in cost is in the range of Rs.15 to Rs.90. The increase in the quarterly season ticket (QST) will vary from Rs.40 to Rs.240 from April 1.
The hike will make approximately four lakh commuters on WR and 6 lakh on CR travelling daily in first class compartments pay more for their travel.
The fare on WR will be calculated by summing the increase in base fare, the development charges and the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) surcharge. The MUTP surcharge varies according to the distance travelled. The development charge for a single ticket and MST is Rs.20 and for a QST it is Rs.60. The MUTP surcharge on the other hand is nil for the first ten kms. For a single journey a surcharge of Rs.2 is charged, while for a MST and QST it various from Rs.20-40 and Rs.60-120 respectively for 11 kms and beyond.
In case of CR in addition to these charges, the surcharge by City and Industrial Development Corporation ltd. (CIDCO) will also be included while calculating the new fare for commuters travelling beyond Vashi and on Trans-harbour line. The surcharge levied by CIDCO ranges from Rs.42 to Rs.200 for MST and from Rs.2 to Rs.5 for single journey for first class travel.
