A 40-year-old woman has been arrested by Agripada police who kidnapped a five-day-old baby from the hospital ward while his mother was asleep. The arrest was made within seven hours while the arrested lady Hezal Donald Correa handed over to cops for further investigation.

According to Police sources, the lady was caught at VN Desai hospital where she went for a check-up, claiming the baby to be hers. She kidnapped the boy from Nair hospital and later walked into VN Desai hospital claiming she wanted a check-up done for her child who was delivered at home. But an alert constable Gaikwad attached to Vakola police station who was on duty in the hospital and the staff noticed that the baby had a tag that helped them identify that the baby was delivered in a BMC hospital.

However, this made them suspicious and they started probing her with more questions, which is when the inconsistencies in her responses got them suspicious of her. Constable Gaikwad was also aware that there was a case of a baby being kidnapped from Nair hospital registered at the Agripada police station and the CCTV footage's of the incident was already viral on social media.

Based on this, the constable alerted the on-duty doctor and his superior as well, during the investigation cops come to know the lady and her husband Donald are residents of Nallasopara and are childless couple. After the arrest the kidnapped boy was handed over to his parents while the arrested lady Hazel was kept under police custody.

On Thursday, Agripada police registered a kidnapping case under section 363 of the IPC, on the basis of a complaint by child's mother Sheetal Ramesh Salvi. Police informed that around 4:30 pm when the baby’s mother Sheetal, a resident of Gurav Chawl, Dahisar who was admitted to Ward No 7 was sleeping with her sister-in-law, a woman entered the ward and fled with the baby.

When Sheetal woke up, she started looking for her son. She could not find the baby despite conducting inquiries with the hospital authorities and finally approached the police station and lodge the FIR against the lady. CCTV footage played an important role in helping the police identify the suspect.

Senior Police Inspector from Vakola Police station Kailash Awhad said ''Constable Gaikwad's presence of mind played vital role to crack this case, once she left from VN Desai hospital than it would be very difficult to trace her, constable Gaikwad already praise by top cop of Mumbai Police.”
