Naiks says that the agencies are not sure of the charges themselves and by shifting their angle from terror to money laundering, it shows their desperation.

In a statement issued through his public relations manager, Islamic preacher Zakir Naik questioned the autonomy of Indian agencies, saying that they were 'desperately' trying to comply with the instructions of their political bosses and put him in jail.

He said further that they are not sure of the charges themselves and by shifting their angle from terror to money laundering, show their desperation. “The desperation is shameful to their own autonomy as well as to Indian democracy” the statement read, stating further that they were trying everything to put him in jail whether he is guilty or not. “In the process, the Enforcement Directorate continues to waste its time and taxpayers money in bringing about injustice and harassment,” he said.

Naik stated that the agencies were trying to get a Red Corner Notice issued against him by the Interpol through a money laundering case when the terror charges could not get Interpol to issue a RCN. “The Indian agencies are desperately trying to pin something on me. Some charges, any charges.” he stated.

He reasoned further that when the agencies tried to attach his properties they were stopped by the Appelate Tribunal because they could  not prove that the properties were acquired through illegal means.

He said the charges against him were only an excuse to get him back to India and put him in jail. Further, that he had made offers on several occasions to the agencies to question him much before his organization and he were banned in 2016 and that he had never shied away from questioning. But, that he was banned without a single chance to explain his side of the story. “It looks like my punishment has already been decided,” he said.

Explaining why he is not returning to the country, he said, “ The recent history of India is replete with cases of Muslims arrested and put in jail for 8, 10, 15, even 20 years before being declared innocent by the courts. Knowing this record of Indian agencies, I would not like to take a chance of ruining my life and my unfinished work.”

He repeated the offer he had made earlier, that the Supreme Court give in writing that he will not be arrested and jailed until he is convicted and then he would return to the country, “and return today” he said.
