Have a waste plastic bottle? Don't throw it in the bin, instead reuse it for your road. Yes, you heard it right. Dr. R. Vasudevan – Plastic man of Madurai, during an open discussion in TEDx Dharavi event on the beneficial use of plastics held yesterday, revealed that Mumbai will soon get pothole free plastic roads.

“We had a talk with the civic body about plastic roads one month ago, this year we will begin with Research and Development and also work on sample roads of 200 or 150 km. The corporation will itself adopt this technology,” said Kuldeep Takalkar of Hindura group, a group which assists in promoting such unique technology.

Mumbai got its first plastic road, a 1.5 km stretch at Prabhadevi in 2006. “The road at Prabhadevi is still pothole free and is smooth even after these many years. During the floods in Mumbai, this was the only road which was in better condition,” said Vasudevan.

Popularly known for his plastic revolution, Vasudevan has already managed to reach out to 11 states with the concept of plastic roads. Currently, states like Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have adopted this unique technology.

In this technology, the molten plastic is dissolved in asphalt to the tune of 2-3 per cent. Plastic, when blended with asphalt improves the strength of the road.

Vasudevan is the dean and head of the Chemistry Department at Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), Madurai. He started off with this unique technology in2002. “I am a waste now who is becoming useful for another waste like plastic,” said Vasudevan.

Did You Know?
'Plastone' another technology for roads founded by Vasudevan, includes a mixture of waste plastic and stones. According to Vasudevan, the more the pressure is put on this block, it will expand instead of breaking.
