Gives in to Student Law Council demands

The University of Mumbai postponed law examinations yesterday after coming under immense pressure from the Student Law Council (SLC) in the past couple of weeks. The SLC, which demanded the exams be postponed as the varsity had not declared the previous semester results got what they wanted after the University announced the examinations shall start from May 30 and circulated the time-table to all colleges concerned.

The University  also assured students that the previous semester results will be declared within the next 10 days.

The SLC released a statement yesterday saying, “We appreciate the decision of Mumbai University to acknowledge the grievances of over 2000 law students. However, our demand was that MU must postpone the exams and also ensure that exams do not clash with CS /CA exams. With the current postponement, exams will clash with CS exams. Therefore we urge MU to forthwith initiate corrective measures to avoid clashes in exams; focus on declaring results of previous Semesters' (1, 3 and 5) exams at the earliest and ensue that the quality of assessment is not hampered”.

The SLC also suspended their protest which was to take place today.

SLC president Sachin Pawar said, “We are happy with the decision but the University should not overshoot their deadline this time and release all results within the time promised. We are not only working toward helping law students but are also trying to make sure the results of law and CA/CS examinations do not clash”.

Not all students, however, were happy with the postponement and a student who did not wish to reveal her identity said, “While SLC has touted it is firmly acting in the best interests of the majority of students, between last week and this week they have changed their stance to now seek further postponement of the exams after MU already announced an additional extension today. This has turned into a ridiculous exercise that has left students confused and extremely frustrated with all the uncertainty. We were following a strict schedule for these exams but now have to readjust to it all”.
