Only a few schools and colleges 'bandh'

Many were not at all affected by yesterday’s protests

In light of the statewide protests and rumored 'bandh' in the city yesterday, some schools and colleges remained closed. Schools in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Nalasopara, and some in the suburbs as well, declared a precautionary holiday for their students. A lot of schools in the city, however, continued to function normally.

These schools and colleges that conducted their regular lectures yesterday did not face any problems. While a few bus services were suspended, most continued to run fine. The suburban city collector had stated on Wednesday that there would be no official holiday for schools and colleges of Mumbai. A lot of institutes, however, used their own discretion and declared a holiday – with some even taking this decision early yesterday morning. A school official said, “The safety of our students is what is most important to us.” Some schools held their morning lectures, but canceled the ones scheduled for the afternoon.

Niyusha Bolar, a student studying in a college at Vile Parle, said, “The college was functioning like regular and none of our lectures were cancelled. Barring a few students who stay in Navi Mumbai, everyone was present – the students, teachers as well as the administration staff. If I had not read in the newspapers about the protests, I would not even be aware of it as yesterday went by as just another day.”
