Police nakabandis under CCTV surveillance

After witnessing an increased number of clashes between motorists and on-duty police officials on the road, especially during 'nakabandi' (road-blocks), the city police is planning to install CCTV cameras at all major spots where road-blocks are placed most of the time.

Many times, motorist claim that arrogant behavior on part of the on duty police officer has caused them to become aggressive and attack or abuse them. However, the police officers, in their defense, claim they are attacked for booking  the motorists as per law. This makes it very challenging to know who was at fault.

Keeping such incidents in mind, the Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar has announced that at all major junctions, chowk, gallis and signals which do not have CCTV cameras in place, will now have them installed to know what transpires between motorists and  police officers.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of that particular area will be responsible for keeping tabs on CCTV camera activities. He will also have to report to Joint Commissioner of Police or Mumbai Police Control Room regarding updates from time to time.

Few narrow lanes and service roads are also to be covered by CCTV cameras as many  motorists used to flee after spotting a road-block.

In August 2016, after battling for life for over a week, Traffic Head Constable Vilas Shinde (51) died due to an attack by two brothers while on duty in Khar (W).
