A day after the end of Ramadan after the celebration of Eid, Mumbai’s crime branch started an intensified crackdown on the August 11 Azad Maidan riots.
Right from the night of August 21 till the morning of August 22, the crime branch sleuths arrested around 19 rioters participated in August 11 riots, said police.
According to Jt. CP (Crime) Himanshu Roy, “Among the latest arrested, two accused – Niyazuddin Sheikh and Mohammad Ansari – were produced in the Esplanade Court on Wednesday and remanded to police custody till August 28.”
The remaining arrested 17 accused will be produced in the court on Thursday, added Roy.
Sheikh (28), a resident of Wadala had burnt the OB van that belonged to ABP Mazza news channel, said police sources. Ansari (21) is a resident of Kurla (W). With these arrests, totally 43 rioters are arrested hitherto by the crime branch.
The latest arrests of the rioters were the work of several crime branch sleuths from various Units of the crime branch in the city.
More arrests are possible, informed Roy adding that police is investigating the case from all different angles.
