Potholes mar Mumbai-Pune highway at Govandi

Two days of heavy rainfall in the city has revealed the terrible condition of the roads where flyover construction work is underway on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road at Govandi.

Quite a few major accidents have occurred on the stretch between Shankara Colony and Mandala signal at Mankhurd, which is known as the Mumbai-Puna Express Highway (Ghatkopar-Mankhurd (GM) Link Road) and features six traffic signals.

The accidents occurred due to narrow roads and wider potholes where bikes slip and small and big vehicles ram into one another. This season the number of accidents have increased due to the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd flyover work. Vehicles are parked illegally on both sides of the Link Road and the traffic has increased but the authorities are not taking any action to solve the problem. Around 50-70 potholes were found on just a 500-metre stretch of the road, leading to traffic jams in the area.

Accidents occur as these busy roads are devoid of speed breakers. The accidents occur between these signals because no speed breakers are present on either side of the roads, with vehicles tending to speed up leading to fatal accidents.

Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) hollow annual assurance, Mumbai is dotted with crater-shaped potholes.

The Mumbai Police Traffic Department’s solution to the problem of frequent accidents on the GM link road in Govandi involved the use of few rubber speed breakers.

“After installing the rubber speed breakers it was observed that in the past few months not a single fatal accident occurred, but presently the rubber speed breakers are not in place,” according to sources.

Due to the poor condition roads and potholes the vehicle movement is slow and traffic becomes stagnant.
