Railways to tackle monsoon head on

In a disaster management meeting held between civic and railway officials, issues related to tackling the effects of monsoon were discussed. Around 50km of tracks in the suburban rail network have been raised, the railways informed the room, adding that OHE (Overhead equipment) at various spots has also been raised. This will help the railways deal with monsoon woes of water logging at tracks.

The possibility of a corpus fund was also discussed in the meeting. This fund, if sanctioned, would be specifically used to deal with monsoon disaster prevention and damages, said an official. Currently, the civic authorities pay the railways for the maintenance of several civic amenities that fall under the railway jurisdiction. In areas like Matunga, a system of gates could be installed near the tracks to deal with water logging, said a railway official.

The civic body was also asked to help other municipal bodies like the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation, with the heavy machinery required to clean the area near tracks, if the need arises. In addition to this, the railway official spoke about the nine bridges that have been identified for inspection on the suburban network. These bridges would either be repaired or struck down depending on the damage found.
