RERA receives more than 90% complaints from homebuyers

Nearly 2,000 complaints have been received by MahaRERA

In a recent finding, the Maharashtra Real Estate and Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has received around 2,000 complaints since the time of its inception from homebuyers as well as developers. Official RERA sources claimed that more than 90 per cent of the complaints are coming from homebuyers.

The Maharashtra Real Estate and Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) came into force on May 1, 2017. Since its inception, all the developers are bound to be registered under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. The authority had given a specific period of time for the developers and agents to register themselves under the MahaRERA act. However, those who missed the deadline, are now paying a penalty for the same.

Apart from that, the Real Estate authority has started an online portal recently which lets the developers as well as the homebuyers to register their complaints. The authority further scans the complaints, and calls the complainant and the respondent for a hearing. Recently, the real estate authority has appointed two adjudicating officers to decide on the penalty while hearing the cases against developers. “Till now, we have almost 2,000 complaints in our hands. However, some of the complaints that we receive are related to civic disputes. Hence, we dismiss them. If we keep on hearing all the cases, including the ones which are not even in our hands, then we will never be able to solve anything in time”, said Gautam Chhaterjee, Chairman, Maharashtra Real Estate and Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA).

According to official sources, more than 90 per cent of the complaints registered are from the homebuyers for cases such as compensation, delay for possession of their houses, completion of the project and so on. “The most common issues we receive, are of allottees, delay for the possession, omission and commissions. And most of the complaints we receive are pertaining to homebuyers”, said Vijay Satbir Singh, a member of the Maharashtra Real Estate and Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA).

So far, around 15,000 projects have been registered under the MahaRERA and more than 13,000 agents have been registered.
