For the next two years Mumbai, Nagpur and Ulhasnagar will have male Mayors. Already, Sena leaders Sunil Prabhu and Rahul Shewale are positioning themselves as potential candidates for the post of the Mayor in BMC.
In Nashik too three RPI (A) corporators have suddenly become crucial in the rat race for the Mayors post. As per the lottery for the reservation for the post that was drawn yesterday there is no reservation now for the Nashik Mayors post. With women’s reservation for the post in mind Nashik district guardian minister Chaggan Bhujbal was angling for a victory of his daughter-in-law.
However, unconfirmed reports suggest of RPI (A) faction leader Ramdas Athawale hobnobbing with Bhujbal over extending his support to the NCP for the mayor’s post.
In Ulhasnagar civic body too which has thrown up a hung verdict the BJP is trying hard to woo the Ganga Jal Front, a local NGO which has eight corporators in the civic body. In the neighbouring Thane the NCP has thrown its hat in the ring and has claimed that it too was in a position to stake claim to power. Both the NCP and the Sena are trying hard to rope in the two BSP corporators who have won.
The reservation for the post in these civic bodies will remain open but for men. The reservation for these bodies was drawn up on June 10, 2010 on the basis of the earlier 33 per cent reservation for women and on the basis of the 2001 census. Now by lucky draw the reservation for the post of Mayor (Women-SC, ST and Citizens Backward Class-CBC) will be drawn up on the basis of the now enhanced 50 per cent reservation for Women in SC, ST and CBC category.
The new reservation will be applicable for the post of Mayor till 2013 in municipal corporations of Chandrapur, Nashik, Mira-Bhayandar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Dhule, Nanded, Latur and Parbhani as well as Kalyan-Dombivli (KDMC), Thane, Navi Mumbai (NMMC), Pune, Solapur and Vasai-Virar. The reservation for the post of Mayor in KDMC, TMC, NMMC, Pune and Solapur is already reserved for Women from CBC category.
