Popular senior TV and film actor Ajay Wadhavkar passed away yesterday after a prolonged battle with throat cancer. The stocky Wadhavkar, who shot to fame from yesteryears milestone TV serial ‘Nukkad’ where he played the bumbling cop Ganpat Hawaldar and more recently in TV serial ‘Pavitra Rishta’ where he played Sushant Singh Rajputs’ father.

Besides his terminal illness, Ajay was deep in financial crisis and couldn’t afford the treatment. Despite the fact that Wadhavkar had not enrolled as a member of the CINTAA Artistes Association, Samaritan comic mega-star Johnny Lever rushed to his rescue and arranged for urgent funds for his chemotherapy treatment. The versatile Ajay had also acted in Shah Rukh Khan starrer films like 'Yes Boss', 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani' and 'English Babu Desi Mem'. According to his co-star colleagues he failed to manage his career and finances, and had been living in a rented house in Kandivli.

Lamented Johnny Lever, “Its really heart-breaking that we have been losing so many talented actors to cancer. And now its Wadhavkar’s turn to succumb to the deadly illness. A wonderful friendly human being and a fabulous spontaneous actor – we will all miss him. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Lever when contacted.

All his co-stars from ‘Pavitra Rishta’ especially actress Usha Nadkarni who played his wife, expressed their heartfelt condolences and assured their continued support to his bereaved family.
