The times could not have been this bad for Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president and MLA Kripashankar Singh. First, it was the humiliating drubbing the Congress got in the just-concluded BMC elections, and now, the Bombay High Court has passed a damning verdict in the disproportionate assets case against Singh. The MRCC chief claims that just after the BMC poll results were out, he had forwarded his resignation to the party high command and that it was up to the party to decide. He, however, has denied that he has offered to step down due to the HC ruling.
Congress sources on Wednesday disclosed that the embattled MRCC chief had already tendered his resignation. Both Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MRCC) president Manikrao Thakare have announced the resignation of Singh. Stepping up the tirade against the MRCC chief, the BJP has demanded his sacking from the party.
During the BMC poll campaign, the Sena had launched a virulent campaign in its party mouthpiece ‘Samana’. At one point of time, Singh claimed to have enjoyed cordial relations with Sena chief Bal Thackeray, but today he finds himself being accused of taking the party leadership for a ride over the poll prospects of the Congress in the BMC elections. The final nail in the coffin was driven by AICC state in-charge Mohan Prakash, who expressed his clear displeasure over the poor show at the poll hustings.
