India's first International Conference on Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Neurodevelopment Disorders (ICACN) was organised on Friday. The three-day conference aimed to teach new methods in handling children and adults with various mental and physical disabilities and also make people aware about new technologies that are available for treatment.

On Friday, 16 speakers from various fields of knowledge and practice conducted seminars and lectures explaining to parents the various methods that can be used to help their children. Some of the highlights for the first day were aquatic speech therapy, brain gym, hand splinting, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Hippotherapy and Neuro Development Therapy (NDT) sessions that were conducted by various doctors working in the respective fields.

Other highlights of the day were speech therapy, physiotherapy robots and neurological therapies that were being introduced by various entities. Dr. Alok Sharma, Director of NeuroGen Brain & Spine Institute said that such sessions are being organised so that parents can have direct interactions with experts. “It will be an educational session for parents and will help them understand the various methods which are not commonly practiced in India,” said Dr. Sharma.

About 250 parents were going to attend the conference according to Dr. Sharma. “We are also accepting parents who will register on the spot. We will also be accepting doctors who want to know more about the various methods that are being taught here. An app called Meri Vaani was also announced to be launched in the Indian market. “Neuro Hero will be launching this app on May 11 this year and will be available in the local languages too. It will assist children with mental disabilities to improve their speech and other skills,” said Dr. Milind Sonawane, who is a speech therapist from Ireland and is also one of the creators of the app.
