In the age of Internet shopping, online cheating has become an ugly reality with many such cases registered by OLX in Chembur. The Chembur police arrested two persons who would con people by selling them dummy cell phones on OLX, which were basically phone bumper cases stuffed with paper. The police have recovered the 'mobile phones' and Rs 40,000  in cash from the accused.

Senior Inspector Jayparkash Bhosle of Chembur police station said, “The accused identified as Imtiaz Malik (21) and Rohan Malik (21) are residents of Uttar Pradesh and used to fly down to Mumbai to supply the head of the gang fake mobiles. They were first wanted in a case where a youngster was duped. Soon more complaints started pouring in.”

On the instructions of DCP Shahji Umap, a team was formed under the leadership of Police Inspector (Crime) Sudhir Gadkari, Asistant Police Inspector (API ) Sachin Kadam and Police Sub Inspector (PSI) F. K. Mulani, who investigated the case.

API Kadam said, “We registered a case and were on the lookout for the accused. We then got a tip-off about the two accused coming to a place in Ghatkopar to sell their material. We laid a trap and arrested the duo. Both have confessed to duping at least six more people the same way. They have similar cases in their name in police stations like J.J. Marg, Ghatkoper and Dadar. We are now trying to ascertain how many more people are involved in the racket. Further investigation are in progress.
