The state Congress yesterday came down heavily on the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari for insulting the Indian Navy. The party has also demanded a categorical apology from him.

Speaking to reporters, the state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant referred to Gadkari's statement about why all Navy officials need to stay in the tony South Mumbai area and about how an inch of land should not be given to the Navy to build flats or quarters in that area. He said, “Gadkari should apologise for insulting the Indian Navy by saying he will not give an inch of land to Navy officers in Mumbai. He has also asked them to go on Pakistan border. We strongly condemn these remarks.”

“The Union Minister was insisting on a floating hotel. This project would have been a direct threat to Mumbai’s security. The entire proposal should be thoroughly probed. BJP’s patriotism is nothing but a sham. Gadkari’s comments are damaging the morale of Navy officers,” Sawant further added.

Significantly, Gadkari’s public displeasure came in the backdrop of the Navy declining permission for building a floating jetty at Malabar Hill. On this particular spot, a floating hotel and seaplane service are planned. The Navy took objection to helipad and redevelopment projects in South Mumbai due to security issues especially against the backdrop of the 26/11 terror attacks.
