Convicted accused men and women to meet their kids on Valentine Day

Valentine Day does not mean giving importance only to a boyfriend or a girlfriend but the person who is more important than any other one in your life is your Valentine. Keeping this mind the state prison department has come up with new idea to celebrate Valentine Day on February 14. On this day children can meet their parents who are convicted and behind bars.

The state prison department has allowed children to meet their mother/father who is behind bars, till now 50 applications have been received by the department. The Byculla Jail has around 510 convicted accused behind bars.

Earlier, children could meet their parents only with the help of NGOs who are working for the betterment of the convicted accused, but this time prison department came up with the idea.

With respect to the security measure on this day, the prison department has allowed only below 16 year-old children to meet their relatives who are behind bars. Many times it seems that relatives are not coming to meet convicted accused just because they had done wrong in the society which in the process hurts and frustrates the convicts.

After meeting with the kids, most the convicted accused tend to become emotional while few even tend to change for the better, when confronted by their weeping kids. This in turn may effect a positive impact on their minds.

An officer from the prison department said, “It is a good move which we have adopted, it may have a good impact on the minds of people who are behind bars, we will continue with this Valentine Day initiative.''

There are nine Central jails in the state while 31 are district jails and inside all these jails we are going to kick start this initiative, he said.
