Although it was only last Saturday that the students’ council of Mumbai University was elected, in less than a week’s time they have started work to usher in changes for the betterment of the colleges and the students.
The fifteen member council has already approached the MU to take an initiative and start a ‘No Head-Phone Campaign’ not only in colleges but also on the streets, railway stations, highways and the bus-stops.
The idea for this campaign struck the council after the untimely death of Ruia college student Saurabh Pendkar, who was run over by a local while listening to music on his earphones while crossing the railway track.
A latest study by the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, says that regular use of earphones may increase the chance of a person losing his auditory senses.
“So the students’ council has come up with the idea to start a ‘No head-phone campaign’ and has planned flash mob activity which will avoid youth from the habit of wearing ear-phones,” said newly elected students’ council secretary Dahanshree Patil.
When the ADC contacted the Director of Students’ Welfare of MU, Mrudul Nile, he said, “It’s an great initiative which the students council has come up with, actually the earphone issue has to be taken care of and that’s what the students council will be doing. We have planned for a flash mob activity which will take place at various railway stations, signals, bus stops and prominent youth centric locations.”
