Even as the Aarey development plan becomes the most debated topic in the government and environmental circles, the VIBGYOR High, Malad organised a ‘Green Camp’ in the school last weekend to support the ‘Save Aarey Campaign’. The entire activity was initiated and volunteered by the students from Grade 5-8. The students arranged various activities for the parents like quiz about nature, slogan writing, message writing with thumb impression in an outlined tree, took them through animated videos and also showcased a presentation highlighting different ways to reduce carbon footprint.

Green Camp was an outcome of the informative experience the students had during their participation in the tree walk at Aarey, organised by ‘Save Aarey’ community which is a voluntary action group of concerned citizens working together with associated NGOs such as ‘Vanashakti’, ‘Greenline’, ‘Walkers club’ etc. The trail briefed them on identification of various trees, their relevance to our existence and associated mythological stories and the importance of preserving nature. The students also wrote their messages on postcards to the environment ministry for preservation of the colony during their visit to Aarey.

VIBGYOR High is the first and the only school, at present, to participate in the ‘Save Aarey’ Campaign. Around 300 parents and students extended their support to the movement by creating a banner through finger imprint and signature and also writing messages on postcards. The banner would be displayed at various events related to the campaign, while the postcards will be shared with the government and tree authorities, representing the public’s views towards the cause.

Appreciating the initiative by their students, Ms. Sunita George, Principal, VIBGYOR High, Malad said, “As an educational institution, it is important that we enlighten our students to the needs of the society.  At VIBGYOR High, students are provided with varied opportunities that help in preparing them for responsible citizenship.”

VIBGYOR High, Malad has been inculcating the understanding on the cause and purpose of nature preservation in their students through various mediums. The school had also organised guest lectures by Kripa Raman, Naturalist with 20 years of experience in journalism; Lovleen Mishra, Theatre artist and Naturalist and Priya Mishra, associated with various NGOs to create awareness about preserving the ‘GREEN LUNG’ of the city. The school will also be conducting tree walks for groups of students at regular intervals to spread awareness about preserving the natural resources of the city.
