A Kalyan-based girl traveling on a CSMT-bound train was attacked by a minor boy in an attempt to steal her phone on Tuesday morning.

The victim, identified as Dravita Singh (23), was on her way to work in a second class coach when she got a call from her family around 9.30 am. Due to weak reception inside the compartment she moved to the door to continue the call. As the train slowed down between the Sandhurst Road to Masjid railway station, a boy who stood on the tracks waiting to rob an unsuspecting commuter by the door, hit her with a stick, causing her to fall off the train. “As she lay on the tracks unconscious, a train coming from the opposite direction hit her. As a result, Singh lost a hand and a leg,” said CSMT Railway Police Force (RPF) Inspector S.D. Shinde.

The RPF then sent three intercepting teams to look for the boy who was identified and nabbed from a  footpath at Sandhurst Road. The police also recovered the stick used to attack Singh and her phone worth Rs. 18,000. During interrogation the accused admitted to the crime and also to selling the phone to a Masjid-based woman Rukhsar Ahmad Barguya (25), who has also been arrested. The boy further stated that he does not live with his family and is an alcoholic. He blamed his addiction for his need to steal and said he had been stealing phones for years.

The CSMT railway police has booked him under Sections 307, 394 and 397 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Further investigations a being conducted.
