Yashodhar Phanse, Ritu Tawde elected heads of BMC’s Standing, Education Committees

BJP and Sena corporators defeated their nearest Congress rivals by 7 and 8 votes respectively

The elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations's (BMC) Standing Committee and Education Committee Chairmen 2015-16 were conducted on Monday, in which Yashodhar Phanse and Ritu Tawde were elected as chairman respectively.

The nominations for the chairmanship of the Standing Committee and the Education Committee were filed on Saturday. The election was held on Monday in the committee hall with raising of hands by all the corporators and the results were later declared.

In the Standing Commitee election, out of total 26 members, 23 participated in the elections where Shiv Sena Corporator Yashodhar Phanse got 15 votes against Congress Corporator Vakrunnissa Ansari who got 8 votes. The single SP corporator stood neutral while 2 MNS corporators were absent. As Phanse won by 7 votes he was re-elected as Standing Committee Chairman.

Addressing his colleagues, Phanse thanked everybody for giving him opportunity to work as the  Standing Commitee Chairman and that he would perform his duties diligently to provide necessary amenities to citizens of Mumbai. He also drew the attention to some points in his speech, about the issues that would benefit the citizens, such as Octroi, Property Tax, Storm water drainage, Solid waste management etc and promised that he would  work hard in all these aspects.  In the Education Committee election, out of total 26 members, 22 members participated in the elections where BJP Corporator Ritu Tawde got 15 votes against Congress Corporator Winnie D'Souza who got 7 votes. The lone SP corporator stood neutral while 3 MNS corporators were absent. As Tawde won by 8 votes, she was elected as new Education Committee Chairman.

In her speech to her colleagues, Tawde drew attention towards some suggestions she had made to the BMC administration regarding the students and teachers in BMC schools, cleanliness, appropriate atmosphere to study at school as well as at home etc. She also said that with academic development, student's mental health development is also important. Tawde also appreciated that BMC schools have many meritorious teachers and further requested that a high level committee should be appointed by the BMC to honour them.
