The Nrityaranjani Fine Arts Academy (Kandivli) presented the two-day Kala Samarpanam festival at the Veer Savarkar Auditorium, Shivaji Park. It was interesting to watch four distinct classical dance styles being performed by accomplished performers on the same platform.

The Nrityaranjani Fine Arts Academy is headed by accomplished Bharata Natyam exponent Guru Revathi Srinivasraghavan, who trains several aspirants in the field of Bharata Natyam and has performed for varied prestigious festivals. The top performers of the festival included Vyajyanti and Prateeksh Kashi, Shyamala Surendran, Uma Dogra and Revathi Srinivasraghavan. Besides the traditional 'Alarippu', Revathi performed the elaborate 'Varnam' – a composition by Lalgudi Jayaram that portrays the inter-relationship between the heroine and Lord Krishna as she wonders as to why the Lord is hiding from her. Sung effectively by Krishnamurthy, this number was well performed, revealing the emotional state of the heroine. Besides Sagara Sayana, the Dwijijavati Balamuralikrishna Thillana was precisely performed. Revathi received fine orchestral support from Krishnamurhty for vocal, Satish Krishnamurthy for mridangam, violin by Aanatharamanm and flute by Atul Sharma.

The 'ashtapadi' 'Dheer Sameere Yamuna Teere' was sung well by Vaibhav Makand and enacted by Uma Dogra, portraying the romantic inter-relationship between Radha and Krishna. It was encouraging to watch Uma introducing her disciples Rachana and Deeksha in the pure dance footwork, ably supported on tabla by Satyaprakash.

Mohiniattam exponent Shyamala Surendran performed along with her disciples Usha, Sindhu, Ameera and Anita. The piece de resistance of the evening was lullaby 'Omana thingal Kidavo' and the 'Ramayana Saptam' that portrays the entire Ramayana in a nutshell, performed with grace and dramatic quality. The mother-daughter duo Vyjyanti and Prateeksha Kashi created a lasting impression with their powerful performance that included the 'Hiranyakashupu episode', the 'hunch Kubja', 'Krishna Leela Tarangam' and 'Jagdho Dharana'. A fine festival indeed.
