Dancing with time

Drutam Dance Ideas Lab presented an unusual and interesting program 'Kaal' (time) – an exploration of the exciting dimensions of time through dance at the Ravindra Natya Mandir Auditorium. Five classical dancers came forward to interpret time in their own individualistic style and technique.

Drutam Dance Ideas Lab has been established by accomplished Bharata Natyam exponent Anusree Bonnerjee with the intention of encouraging dancers to interact with different styles and form a creative statement that would appeal to a larger section of the audience, and also to explore themes that are normally not interpreted in classical dance performances. One such theme was 'Kaal', or time. The program commenced with a performance by young Odissi exponent Namaha Mazoomdar, who experimented with the theme of life in a theatrical style. Namaha has studied Theatre Arts in Singapore and has formed her own theatre group.

Anusree Bonnerjee commenced her performance with invocation of the Gayatri Mantra 'Om Bhur' and proceeded on to depict time through the life cycle of time pertaining to birth, childhood, youth, old age and finally death. It was based on a Bengali poem sung well by the singer and interpreted in Bharata Natyam and a creative style, quite effectively and elegantly.

Kathak dancer Tanvi Palav was elegantly attired and danced with confidence and precision. Pure dance patterns on 'teentaal', footwork and lively movements proved the point that rhythm and the time beat are inseparable. Nilesh Singha and Mubina Barve were the only couple to dance together and performed 'Maha Kaal', featuring the varied manifestations and glory of the Lord of dance known as 'Nataraja', sung with the commendable voice of Guru Padmini Radhakrishnan. Both Nilesh and Mubine make a fine team and created a lasting impression with their dramatic performance.
