Ekam unites dancers

The two-day Ekam festival of dance which unites top dancers from various parts of the country was unusual, both in substance and structural quality, portraying the point that although the styles may be different, the basic philosophy of reaching out to the supreme is one – hence unity in diversity. The program was held at the Dublin Square of Phoenix Market City mall in Kurla.

The festival was curated by Bhrata Natyam exponent Kalashree lLata Surendra with the collaboration of Smita Parekh (literaure) and Jalpa Vithalani (visual arts), presented by Anjali Bharata Natyam Research Trust. The festival was inaugurated by Surdas Prabhuji of ISKCON, in the presence of actress Sudha Chandran and Vidya Malvade, Sandip Soparrkar, Girija Oak, Pritika Rao, Shobho Arya, Poetess Manu Lodha, Meghrani and Marami Medhi.

The second day commenced with the powerful Kuchipudi performance by Vyjayanti Kashi who enacted the story of Gandhari who faced adversity with courage. Mohiniattam danseuse Jayaprabha Menon performed 'tatvam', incorporating the Kundalini and the significance of the serpent worship, creating a great impression. Nandita Puri performed Kathak, depicting a Sufi poetic number by Amir Khusro Dehelvi that symbolised divine light and energy.

It was interesting to note as to how the dancers related to the painting featured in the background and to the particular literature or poetic composition by Bharata Natyam dancer Pavitra Bhat, who performed the devotion of the outcast in Nandanar Charitram rather effectively. The other dances of the evening included the performance by disciples of Guru Renu Sharma, disciples of Guru Asha Sunil Kumar, and the disciples of Guru Padmini Radhakrishnan and Shibhada Varadkar. Truly an unusual festival of 'One World, One Dance'.
