SANGEET Mahabharati is a premier music institution in the city. The late Nikhil Ghosh who was a versatile musician and a musicologist was the prime mover behind this institution. He received invaluable support from his wife the late Usha Ghosh who helped Nikhilda to translate his dreams into reality. Now the institution is being run by Nayan Ghosh who is also an equally versatile musician and institution builder.

A musical nite was held in memory of the late Usha Ghosh at the SMB hall and the response of the audience was simply overwhelming. The hall literally overflowed with her admirers and music lovers.

Sahana Bannerjee, a highly talented sitar player who is now based in Pune was the first artiste. She is the daughter and pupil of Santosh Bannerjee, senior exponent of the sitar. Her mother too is a musician belonging to the Rampur Saheswan gharana. Sahana played the raga 'Puriya Dhanashree' which was a perfect choice. The delicate tonal curve teevra madhyam to komal rishabh which rested gently on the note gandhar elicited instant approval. Her gats had a lyrical grace and with young Ishan Ghosh on the tabla, the atmosphere was electrified by the lively music. Sanhita Nandy, a very dedicated vocalist who is now based in the United States, sang the raga 'Bageshri'. Her methodical approach to the raga unfoldment and her perfect enunciation of swaras made the raga rendition memorable. Girish Nalavade on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium lent superb support.
Veena Chitko, veteran singer and scholar, passed away last week end. She was the daughter of the maestro, the late Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar. Chitko was also a composer and she has composed bhavgeets and bhajans which were recorded by singers of the eminence of Ramdas Kamat. Music circles have mourned the death of this composer and scholar.
