Nrityaranjani Fine Arts Academy presented the debut Bharatanatyam performance by Nidhi Devarajan at Veer Savarkar auditorium last week. The highlight of the performance was the technical quality, precision and command over expressive dancing.

Nidhi is the talented disciple of accomplished Bharatanatyam exponent Guru Revathi Srinivasraghavan who heads the Nrityaranjini fine arts academy in Kandivali. Nidhi commenced her performance with traditional invocatory numbers and followed it with Alarippu in Talamalika which introduced the audience to basic movements and technique of the Bharatnatyam dance style. The 'Jatiswaram' in 'Ragamalika' was a fine treat of music, melody and harmony that synchronised well with the dance movements.

The most elaborate item of the Bharatnatyam repertoire is Natakuranji Varnam, a traditional composition by Papanasam Sivam "Swami Naan", in which the dancer while paying salutations to the lord of dance Nataraja reveals her complete devotion to the lord. Nidhi is a danseuse who is blessed with a natural flair for expressions and has the caliber to delve deeper into such thematic items.

Besides the 'Marathi Janabai bajan', Nidhi revealed her command over intricate footwork and movements in the Balamuralikrishna Thillana. Nidhi received fine musical and orchestral support from Guru Revathi on natwangam, melodious vocals by Sreedev from Kerala and the mridangam played by Satish Krishnamoorthy, along with a lineup of other talented musicians. If Nidhi continues to dance with the same amount of passion and zeal, she can definitely aspire to be among the main rank of dancers.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)A plain Jane day. Work goes on as usual, and there is progress. But as Ganesha says, it's an ordinary day. Hum, whistle, doodle, and sip your green tea. While day dreaming, start planning your dream home. After all, that's where the first plan takes shape.
