And the Supermoon got washed away...

Wednesday, December 06, 2017

On Monday, a celestial phenomenon called the Supermoon — when Chanda mama is closest to the earth in its orbit and appears significantly larger and brighter — was slated to light up the skies.

This was the first in a trinity of Supermoons, with the next two following on January 1 and January 31, 2018. Sky watchers and ordinary Mumbaikars alike were super excited at the prospect of catching the spectacle of the Supermoon but were sorely disappointed when unseasonal showers on Monday evening clouded and shrouded the skies instead. What a dampener that turned out to be!

Evening showers in Mumbai are the worst — especially unexpected ones. They catch office goers on their way back home on the wrong foot. They turn the streets all squelchy and slushy and who needs that at the end of the day?

The rush hour traffic, bad anyway, gets worse with the rains and crawls with agonizing sluggishness, when all you want is to get home fast and get cozy indoors.

Without umbrellas, most pedestrians run helter skelter with hankies on their heads, hoping for the pitter-patter to abate. But the rain clouds on Monday evening had a mind of their own and persisted, washing away the Supermoon in the bargain. Not fair!
