Dada Vaswani passes away

Friday, July 13, 2018

One of the most compassionate Indian spiritualists of the 20th century, Dada Vaswani, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 99. He has left heartbroken millions of disciples around the world who looked upton him as mentor and guiding light in our troubled times. Dada, as he was known, pursued a non-sectarian approach in order to make spirituality accessible to everyone. The central aspiration that sums up his life, according to those who knew him well, was: “May I be the lamp that unfolds the light of love/ of sympathy and service in the darkness of these days.” Winner of the U Thant peace award, Dada had, right up until his last days, been present at sausages at his Punke ashram. He had also recently participated as co-author in the book ‘Conversations with Dada Vaswani: A Perfect Disciple, A Reluctant Master’, with much younger fellow spiritualist Ruzbeh Bharucha, in 2016.  Amazingly, this venerable Master had, with his sagacity, managed to adapt to recent changes in technology by having his videos posted on YouTube (where they can be currently viewed) in the form of conversations that appealed immensely to the younger generation. Even in his nineties this gentle sage was travelling around the world preaching his philosophy of love, compassion and respect for all living beings – his recent trips including Europe, USA and Dubai in 2014. He was to celebrate his 100th birthday on August 2 this year but died a few weeks short of it. As actor Aamir Khan posted on social media yesterday: “Dearest Dada, your physical presence will be missed, but you are with me every day. Love you.” And director Karan Johar tweeted: “Dada...I am blessed to have spent time with you and receive your love and blessings....you leave behind a legacy of immense goodness and love..... RIP.” The Sadhu Vaswani Mission has announced that there will be a darshan yatra in Punke today from 2-4pm where his cortege will travel through the streets of the city culminating with the funeral at 5pm at Sadhu Vaswani Mission.
