Feisty Femme Fatales

Wednesday, January 03, 2018

A bunch of gorgeous Hollywood gals have gotten together to show errant men their place. Over 300 top actresses and female writers, directors and technicians have formed ‘Times Up’ – a collective that seeks to take sexual harassment head on.

The initiative, which has raised $13.4 million, will offer legal aid and subsidised legal support to female and male victims of sexual abuse, particularly from the low-income strata comprising housekeepers, janitors, agricultural workers, factory workers, waitresses and the like.

Fronted by big names in Hollywood like Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portmen and many others including Gloria Steinem, Times Up will also focus on equal pay for women and has requested all women to wear black to the Golden Globe awards to be held next Sunday, as a mark of solidarity.

All this makes your Diarist wonder, why are Indian women keeping quiet? You mean there is no sexual harassment in Bollywood and the proverbial casting couch is just a figment of somebody’s imagination? Come on, unless our actresses are themselves comfortable and complicit with this misogynistic system of functioning, which demands sexual favours from actresses in lieu of roles, how can they not come out loud in protest? Neither do our actresses in Bollywood get parity of pay with their male counterparts.

It’s about time that the likes of Deepika, Priyanka, Alia, Katrina, Kareena and scores of others came forward and launched the India chapter of Times Up. Because the time for sexual harassment, molestation and subjection of women is well and truly up.
