SINCE April 1, fares on the Worli-Bandra Sealink have gone up and we are not cribbing about that at all. What we cannot believe is that someone would stick to the letter of the rules for increasing fares to the extent that a return fare for a car on Mumbai’s showpiece bridge now costs Rs.82.50! Fifty paise when, (1) speed is everything on the bridge and (2) this is not the right place to go scrabbling around for change that most people haven’t even seen in a year. We would very much like to know whether people are actually getting back Rs.17.50 when they proffer a hundred rupee note. All because the return fares absolutely have to be 1.5 times a single fare.
