Kissa kursi ka

Wednesday, December 06, 2017

How much the seat matters. Once you are out of office, your brand value immediately drops — and how. The same person in office and out of office is treated so differently.

One of the most celebrated figures of our times, Barack Obama, former US President, was in Delhi last week. And whilst Prime Minister Narendra Modi met him, as did Rahul Gandhi and some others, the media was cool to his presence.

Time was when the world’s media danced to Obama’s tune. His sound bytes dominated the air waves. His words wowed the print media. Charismatic and articulate, he had a good head on his shoulders and was consistently inspiring. Nothing would have changed to make him any less the person he is.

But this time round he came to India as a private citizen and the same brilliant Barack was given a bit of a brush off by the media. No fawning attention, no overwhelming adulation.

What an absolute pity. But that’s the way the cookie crumbles, tumbles, and humbles!
