#MeToo movement gathers momentum

Friday, October 12, 2018

Seems like the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment of women has found a lot of supporters. Amitabh Bachchan, on his birthday yesterday, was quoted by the media as saying: “No woman should ever be subjected to any kind of misbehaviour, or disorderly conduct; especially at her workplace... It would be an unrepairable blemish if we are not able to provide them the welcome they deserve and the dignity of the security of their presence.” Actor Hrithik Roshan, one of the first showbiz personalities to come out in its support, posted on social media a few days ago: “It is impossible for me to work with any person if he/she is guilty of such grave misconduct (as sexual harassment)…” Aamir Khan, while announcing his decision to walk away from a film because the film’s director had a case of sexual molestation registered against him, posted (along with wife Kiran Rao): “At Aamir Khan Productions we have always had a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct and predatory behaviour of any kind. We strongly condemn any act of sexual harassment…we believe this is an opportunity for the film industry to introspect and take concrete steps towards change. For far too long women have faced the brunt of sexual exploitation. It has to stop. In this regard we are committed to do any and everything to make our film industry a safe and happy one to work in.” The women, on their part, are also taking up cudgels. Actress Aishwarya Rai was quoted in the media as saying: “I think it is a good sign how the #MeToo movement is gaining momentum…I have spoken and will continue to when it comes to speaking for women.” Author and star-wife Twinkle Khanna tweeted: “Hearing stories, identifying in different ways has led to a churning within, long conversations, talking to my mom too about all the things we internalized as working women. Scabs picked at hurt again but it is worth it. A shout out to all the brave women making the world safer (with) MeToo.” And model-turned entrepreneur Rhea Pillai posted on social media: Such a powerful time in India. With the #MeToo movement gaining strength. It’s about time we called harassment by its name.”
